Oerol Festival is built on collaboration with artists. We want to keep developing a festival that is sustainable, inclusive, and rooted in place. Your experience helps guide us.

how you experienced Oerol 2025,
what worked well and what could be improved,
how we can continue to grow — together with you.

We’re focusing on three themes that shape our long-term vision: sustainability, plurality, and rootedness. You can read more about that here.

2. SUSTAINABILITY

Less ecological impact, that is clear: less emissions, less disruption of nature on Terschelling. Sustainability is key for Oerol and that is why Oerol has developed our Ecological Compass. The Ecological Compass is about caring for the island and carefully considering what effect and what impact you want to have… or not have. We invite artists, suppliers and employees to think the same way.

3. PLURALITY

Oerol aims to be a festival that sparks encounters and where everyone feels welcome. Central to this ambition is a commitment to plurality — in our programming, in the audiences we reach, and within our own team. Through the arts, we want to foster a sense of connection. Yet we recognise that Oerol is not yet a welcoming or safe space for everyone. We actively speak out against racism, discrimination, and microaggressions directed at our staff, volunteers, makers, and visitors. We are committed to being a safe environment that reflects the plurality of voices in our society. For this reason, Oerol has introduced a code of conduct, which we have shared with our team and our wider community.

4. ROOTEDNESS

Oerol wants the festival to stay rooted, so that the festival, as well as the organisation itself, does justice to its origins and is genuinely connected to Terschelling. The multifaceted nature of the island and everything that lives there are a source of inspiration.
