With a stick and an empty beer bottle, Gasper Nali plays his babatoni. He combines the sound of this homemade, single-string bass guitar with the driving rhythm of his left foot on a kick pedal and his right hand on a cowhide bass drum. Nali is an internet sensation; since a video of one of his Afrobeat songs went viral, the career of this Malawian artist has taken off.
Nali plays lively and infectious kwela music, a South African genre with Malawian influences. He sings in Chichewa, a language primarily spoken in Malawi. His sound and melodies are wonderfully upbeat and positive, but his songs, often adressing heavier subjects and social issues, definitely carry a message.
