Info
Amira al Rawi is crafting her debut site-specific dance piece, Majnun, at Werkplaats Oerol. Developed during a residency with Oerol and Over het IJ Festival, the performance spotlights one of the two main characters from the ancient Arabic tale of Layla and Majnun, homing in on the theme of alienation.
Majnun, yearning for his love Layla, faces insurmountable barriers. In his deep despair, he pens love poems to Layla and leaves behind his familiar world to isolate himself from society. The tale evokes a sense of alienation and a profound longing for attention and love. Amira al Rawi is both the creator and performer in the show, utilising dance styles based on hip-hop, waacking, house dance, and flamenco. Al Rawi was involved as a new theater maker at Atelier Lab in 2023 and is currently connected with Werkplaats Oerol. The music, featuring electronic, industrial, and Middle Eastern influences, is by Esmail Bnaoe.
This performance is by invitation only on June 15th.
