Theatre-maker and actor Yannick Noomen and creator, actor, and composer Annelinde Bruijs take on the role of two humanoid robots. In this site-specific performance, they explore, with a good dash of philosophy, what it means to be human. In Artificial by Nature, life is sung about by two robots, nonetheless.
What does it mean to be human? What is our nature, and why do we do what we do? What gets us out of bed every day? Nineties explores these fundamental questions through the philosophy of Helmuth Plessner, suggesting that humans are inherently artificial. According to him, a human is a being who looks over his own shoulder at himself and shapes his own life. With the help of ‘artificialities’ such as language, technology and tools, humans stunt through life. Artificial by Nature is a musical ode to plodding man, always on his way to becoming something; himself at best.
