Berlin, 1925. A city pulsing with freedom and extremes. Sven Ratzke takes you into the legendary nightlife — a world of glamour, poverty, jazz and raw decadence — in an era that may have more in common with today than you think. Together with Matangi, he brings the music of Kurt Weill to life: from sultry chansons to wild swing and cinematic soundscapes.
On the opening night of The Threepenny Opera, we encounter Josephine Baker, Bertolt Brecht, Marlene Dietrich and the ‘scandalous’ nude dancer Anita Berber, as we plunge into the turbulent 1920s of Berlin — a vibrant metropolis where being different didn’t provoke, but inspired. It was a time when anything felt possible: free art, wild abandon, and boundless imagination lived to the fullest. With thrilling music and magnetic storytelling, Ratzke delivers a tightrope act on the edge of a volcano. Together with the virtuosic string players of the renowned Matangi Quartet, he presents new arrangements of Kurt Weill’s music and conjures a full soundscape on stage — shifting between swing, chanson, jazz and cinematic textures. A phenomenal fusion of one-man show and music theatre.
