With a large cast of musicians, actors and cooks, Veenfabriek presents its own adaptation of The Clown by renowned Syrian poet and playwright Muhammad al-Maghut. A sharp, satirical performance where black comedy and self-deprecating humour become vital tools of resistance — offering comfort in troubled times, enriched by an Arabic meal and live music.
De Clown follows a travelling theatre troupe using satire to reflect on history and the present day. Their performances are packed with quick-fire jokes — until the clown is suddenly flung centuries into the past. There, he meets Saqr Quraish, the conqueror of Andalusia, who mourns the decline of the Arab world and the loss of Palestine. Back in the present, they find themselves stranded and powerless in a police cell. With biting humour, Al-Maghut poses uncomfortable questions about power, lost pride and freedom. Live Arabic music and a shared meal bring warmth and festivity to the performance — a sharp contrast to its raw satire.
De Clown includes a (vegetarian) lunch or dinner featuring Arabic cuisine. The menu is vegan and lactose-free. In the case of coeliac disease, the composition of the meal can be adjusted accordingly. Unfortunately, it is not possible to accommodate other dietary requirements and/or allergies.
