Expressive yet thoughtful. Sharp but melodic. Explosive yet introverted. Rotterdam’s Library Card is a band of contrasts. The four members came together in the summer of 2021, and a part of this turbulent period has clearly imprinted itself on their music, which restlessly oscillates from angular post-punk to beautiful post-rock and brisk garage.
Led by Lot van Teylingen, whose spoken word shifts from mocking to sincere in seconds, the other members of Library Card are given ample room in their music. From Emre Karayalçin’s unconventional, striking rhythms to Kat Kalkman’s driving bass lines and Mitchell Quitz’s seemingly shape-shifting guitar performances. You could say that each of them is an equal cog in a machine, but that would undersell their human perspective on the band. Yet, it’s impossible to elevate one element of their captivating songs above another.
