Sanne van Balen listened closely to the sounds of Terschelling’s three dialects and translated them into a literary installation, where even the wind has a voice. Through word lists and conversations with islanders, she created a multilingual text — voiced by fluent speakers of the island dialects.
Describing the Wadden dialects is like ‘speaking into the wind’ — a phrase that became the starting point of Sanne’s research. Like a linguistic creature perched atop a dune, the Terschelling language landscape is revealed in this installation as a web of connections. Here, Aasters, Meslânzers and Westers are spoken by the island’s inhabitants. They don’t ask whether a dialect can survive without speakers — they ask whether people are truly listening.
Visual arts can be visited daily from Saturday 14 June between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
