Composer and pianist Martin Fondse and multidisciplinary artist Femi Dawkins explore the power of the Wild Card: the unpredictable element, the joker, the trump that challenges the rules and moves freely between structures. They create a world where acoustic instruments, electronics, spoken word, and poetry merge. Through live sampling, they engage in dialogue with each other and their surroundings.
In a deck of cards, the wild card symbolises ultimate freedom. It can take on any role, disrupt patterns and introduce the unexpected. In society, the joker plays a similar part: the thinker, the dissenter, the artist who challenges entrenched ideas and opens space for something new.
In this collaboration between Martin Fondse and Femi Dawkins, the wild card becomes a voice — radical, poetic and confrontational. Dawkins’ powerful, socially critical texts on justice, the legacy of slavery and the human search for meaning enter into a dialogue of contrasts with Martin’s reflective and adventurous music.
There is no fixed script to this performance. Both musicians play the joker, move freely between disciplines, and invite the unexpected.
