XILLAN

XILLAN (Xillan Macrooy) is a Surinamese-Dutch storyteller who draws on music, literature, and theatre to share his narratives. As a product of multiple worlds, the ongoing transformation of identity plays a central role in his work. At Oerol, XILLAN presents an musical performance of his debut album, SON.

SON is Sranan Tongo for “sun” and stands for a movement toward the light — one that rises and falls, yet always includes the dark. Even at night, the sun is present in its reflection on the moon. Resistance runs like a red thread through XILLAN’s debut album, but above all, it is written as an ode to everyone who, despite the dark clouds above us, dares to search for the light.

In the coming years, XILLAN will develop a triptych: a debut novel, album and theatre production. While the novel looks to the past, the album speaks to the present. He now explores new ways of building artistic worlds that make space for (Surinamese queer) legacy and innovation.
