Water droplets translate the unique heartbeats of Terschelling’s animals — from natterjack toads to cormorants — into melody. When a heartbeat disappears, the melody changes forever. A tribute to the fragile ecosystems we are part of.
Every animal has a unique heart rate. A seal’s heart beats between forty times a minute and, at rest, less than once a minute — while a mouse’s can reach four to six hundred beats per minute. Winner of the Symbio Art Prize, Sanne Vaassen makes six heart rhythms audible through Fountain of Heartbeats, using water droplets falling onto sound boxes. Together, they form a melody in which every heartbeat counts. When one disappears, the balance is disturbed. The installation reveals the invisible rhythms of life on Terschelling — and makes us feel just how vital that balance is to the natural world.
