Tuff Guac is the solo project of Rafael Valles Hilario, who, after conquering countless underground venues with his garage punk, felt the urge to try something new. More pop, more melody, more flavour. And voilà—Raf now brings echoing garage pop with catchy hooks from his debut album to the stage, along with stretchy soul tracks and elastic rock ‘n’ roll from his second record.
Like a Belgian Lucky Luke — the easygoing cowboy who shoots faster than his shadow — Rafael Valles Hilario rarely lets dark thoughts catch up with him. His carefree garage rock is laced with a touch of ’60s bubblegum pop, a dash of country (modest, of course), some glam rock, and a hefty dose of humour and self-mockery. Even his blues is of the cheerful kind. Slightly contradictory — but he pulls it off.
