About Oerol

With islanders, visitors and creators, we will dive into a diverse, accessible program full of site performances, street theater, music, visual art, word art and talks during Oerol Festival 2025. An experience that you will feel in your toes for ten days on Terschelling and remain in your mind for 365 days.

Oerol goes beyond our artistic ambitions. We want to make a difference. And we can. With determination and optimism, we strive for a world in which everyone counts and gets equal opportunities and in which not economic growth but social significance is central. We reach out to anyone who is open to change. We explore and visualize our future together.

We do this on the basis of three principles:

  • We stand for justice and polyphony
Oerol wants to offer new perspectives in social developments. Activist and optimistic, with contagious enthusiasm and an outstretched hand to everyone who is open to joining the change. We strive for a multi-voiced festival by embracing representation and constantly questioning ourselves.
  • We are rooted on the island
Oerol is Terschelling. But Oerol is not an island on Terschelling. We are rooted there and work there year-round. We are based there and part of the community. The residents are our visitors, colleagues, neighbors and suppliers and an important sounding board. For us, the local connection is very important.
  • We take up less space
Oerol is located in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden area, where nature is fragile and unique. The Ecological Compass, introduced in 2023, is our guide to a future-proof festival. With it we invite our team, our suppliers and you to examine the ecological impact of the work and encourage each other to think about how to get the same or more impact with less.

Thanks in part to all the creators, staff and volunteers, Oerol is an island festival that builds a dazzling mix of programs and activities for ten days with Terschelling in the leading role. From east to west; from mudflat to beach.
