The Lonely Tree

When eight hectares of forest had to be cleared at Arjensduin in 2008, Oerol and Staatsbosbeheer decided to make this drastic moment visible. For three years, the changing landscape became part of an art project by Vesta Kroese.
First, installations were built from the felled wood. Then 26 trees from the forest edge were left standing: each one alone in the open field, like a group of strangers together marking the contours of the vanished forest. The following year, a silent walking path emerged from tree to tree, tracing the outline of the former forest edge. Finally, during a performance of the last post in 2010, the remaining edge trees were removed.
Benches were made from those last trees. A place to pause and reflect on what was, and what remains. One pine tree, however, stayed. It is now known as ‘the Lonely Tree’, an icon of the island.
