Oerol wins the Duurzame Dertig 2025 with island-wide sustainability collaboration

Good news: the Sustainable Events Terschelling Project Group, which Oerol has been part of since its launch in 2022, has won the Duurzame Dertig 2025 in the category Sustainable Collaboration.

The award recognises a joint initiative by the Municipality of Terschelling and Stichting Terschelling Circulair, in which Oerol works together with other island events to make event organisation on Terschelling structurally more sustainable.

Taking responsibility together

Anyone organising events in a protected natural area such as the Wadden Sea Region knows how special –and fragile– that environment is. With that awareness, Terschelling-based organisations including Oerol, Fjoertoer, TOF, Berenloop, Springtij and Rock & Roll Street joined forces.

Within the Sustainable Events Terschelling project, they share knowledge and experience, explore circular solutions, and align logistics, material use and waste streams. Together they take practical steps that make a tangible difference – on the island and beyond.

This recognition shows what can happen when you truly connect with one another. By joining forces, sharing knowledge and ideas, and purchasing together, we make sustainability tangible. We’re not pioneering individually, but as a community. Sander van Houten, Stichting Terschelling Circulair

A sustainable example for the North

Each year, the Duurzame Dertig highlights thirty initiatives and companies in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen that make a real difference in the field of sustainability.

In its report, the jury wrote:

“In times when transitions can seem complex, concrete and inspiring examples of how things can be done are essential. Together with the Sustainable Events Terschelling project group, Oerol makes sustainability tangible and achievable.”

Winning the Duurzame Dertig is an achievement and a recognition we are proud of. The award includes a €50,000 media budget, to be spent with publisher Mediahuis.

The start of this collaboration was made possible with the support of the Municipality of Terschelling and the Province of Fryslân.
