Belofte maakt schuld sees theatre-maker Greg Nottrot and writer–performer Martin Rombouts — winner of the Dutch TV quiz De Slimste Mens — tackle one big question: how do you save the world with €120,000? A performance about the responsibility — and the guilt — that comes with wealth.
Two years ago, Greg began a search for surplus wealth. He’s been helping people part with their extra cash — and now, the funds have been collected. But what do you do with it? What kind of responsibility comes with having wealth? Does money carry its own moral weight, or is it about the meaning we assign to it? In just under an hour, Greg and Martin try to answer how we deal with the responsibility of wealth — and the guilt that so often comes with money and expectation.
Belofte maakt schuld is part of the research into the future of money, alongside the performance Doekje voor het bloeden by George Tobal Producties / Het NUT and De Kapitalisten by Het NUT / De Nwe Tijd.
The Gift Shop
Part of the performance is The Gift Shop: a museum shop where art is sold to help pay off someone else’s debts. This is a collaboration with illustrator and designer Mart Veldhuis, who paid off his student debt with his tapestry Eigen Schuld (Own Debt). At The Gift Shop, you’re not just buying art or merchandise—you’re directly contributing to clearing someone else’s debt. So open your wallet and give for someone else! Because, as the capitalists among us like to say: “Money should circulate.” And let’s make sure it circulates in the right direction.
