Zindzi Tillot Owusu, Mona Thijs, Charlotte Westra and Jaimy Hindriks bring the forgotten voice of Frisian poet Ella Wassenaer back to life. At the West-End Theater, you can witness a try-out of this work-in-progress performance.
In 1955, Ella Wassenaer was one of the few female Frisian poets to embrace experimentation. Her collectionReade Runen was panned by critics — unfairly so. Not only was Ella a true pioneer in form, she was also a poet through and through: one who boldly placed the female experience at the heart of her work, in a Frisian literary world still deeply shaped by patriarchy. Four young literary voices — Zindzi, Mona, Charlotte and Jaimy — dove deep into Ella’s world. In this performance, they present their own interpretations of her work, supported by poet, writer and expert on Ella Wassenaer Albertina Soepboer. Together, they not only honour Ella’s poetry, but also raise a powerful voice for all the forgotten women writers of then and now.
This project originates from De Verwonderkamer, an annual residency programme in which Flemish and Northern Dutch writers collaborate on a unique performance, commissioned by deBuren and Explore the North.
This performance is part of the Explore the North Hub. From 13 to 22 June, Explore the North presents work across the island by emerging talents connected to its production house. Explore the North is both a festival and a creative production house based at Podium Explore in Leeuwarden.
