New perspectives on the story of Frisian running legend Foekje Dillema lie at the heart of this multilingual, musical and widely accessible performance, staged in the gym hall of West-Terschelling. The athlete from Burum was forced to end her career abruptly due to doubts cast over her womanhood — a story she remained silent about until her death.
In the late 1940s, Foekje Dillema left her international competition in the dust. The ‘Friese stoomwals’ (Frisian steamroller) from Burum was a top contender for the European Championships in Brussels. But doubts arose: was this lightning-fast country girl really a woman? She refused the newly introduced sex test. Foekje was banned for life — and stayed silent for life. Was it shame? Pride? Resistance? And if she stayed silent, should we? At Oerol, we celebrate Foekje’s explosive power, resilience and quiet defiance.
Foekje is performed primarily in Frisian. Accessibility options include a LED subtitle display in Dutch, smart glasses with subtitles in Dutch and English, a Dutch Sign Language interpreter, personal audio amplification via neck loops, and audio description for people who are blind or vision impaired.
