Nyk de Vries is a literary performer pur sang. A Frisian Amsterdammer who effortlessly knows how to bring magic to the stage. At Oerol he will perform songs from his solo album Hoeveel woorden, on which the special mix of his music and lyrics comes into its own.
Nyk’s background is a constant presence in his work. He grew up in a small Frisian village of farmers and labourers, and now lives with his family in the gentrified neighbourhood of Amsterdam-Oost. This inner divide runs through many of his songs, as he tries to reconcile the contrasting worlds within him. Some of his texts are brought to life in short poetry films, such as Asman, created during his time as Dichter fan Fryslân (Frisian Poet Laureate) for the refuse workers of Leeuwarden. With his suspenseful delivery, Nyk de Vries draws you into his personal story like no one else.
