The international professionals programme opens with a morning on the interaction between festivals and their surroundings. Starting from the context of Oerol and Terschelling, we explore how the arts and creativity can flourish in dialogue with place and community — something all arts organisations can relate to.
This first morning marks the starting point of Oerol’s international professionals’ programme, with welcome addresses from Barbera Wolfensberger (Director-General for Culture and Media at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science) and Roel Cazemier, Mayor of Terschelling.
Chaired by Maaike Muis, we’ll hear from Mikey Martins (Artistic Director of Oerol) and Alexis Nys (Director of Lieux Publics and leader of the European network IN SITU) as they introduce IN SITU and the international professionals’ programme.
This is followed by a brief introduction to the history of Terschelling and a crash course in island context and culture — giving our international guests the chance to find their footing before we dive deeper into the relationship between festivals and context. This conversation takes shape in a panel discussion featuring Linda Di Pietro (BASE Milano, Italy), Pascal Servera (Le Citron Jaune, France), and Mikey Martins (Oerol, the Netherlands).
In a closing workshop, we join Dr Caroline Archambault (Leiden University) to explore how festivals and communities mutually influence one another — an invitation to reflect, from this unique island setting, on how context can enrich the way we work.
This session also marks the first public gathering of the new four-year cycle of IN SITU, the European platform for artistic creation in public space. Oerol is a founding member of this network, which supports artists working beyond the walls of traditional venues. The new Platform project is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. The session will be held in English to welcome our international guests.
