In this residency, the members of Totomboti explore the following questions: How does the way the Saramakan people preserve nature—through spiritual laws—resemble the way nature is protected in the Netherlands and on Terschelling—through human and democratic laws? How do Saramakans, who have grown up with a spiritual connection to the forest and water, observe this? And how can we care for nature in a way that honors both the Saramakan belief in the spiritual forces of nature and the Dutch reliance on law and policy?
Totomboti and Oerol are exploring the possibilities of a multi-year collaboration from 2025 to 2028. The focus is on systems of knowledge and belief that are connected through dignity and merge into one another in order to explore a fundamentally different relationship with nature, with sensitivity to specific places of historical, spiritual, and ecological significance.
