Step aboard and listen: journeying – the weight we carry is a work-in-progress audioguided performance developed through Oerol’s Werkplaats. Created by the non-hierarchical collective SVUNG, it explores what it means to move — and what we bring with us.
This new chapter of SVUNG’s research into journeying takes shape as a participatory performance aboard public transport — a solo experience shared through audio. It asks: what do our bodies hold onto as we cross borders, leave places, or arrive somewhere new? And what do we carry — in our luggage, our memories, our posture?
Developed in part through the Oerol Werkplaats and the European IN SITU network, the performance draws on personal migration stories and broader questions of movement in a world shaped by dislocation, climate, politics and longing. At Oerol, the project is influenced by the ferry crossing, the island’s rhythms, and conversations with locals. SVUNG links their own sense of border-bound isolation to that of islanders — inviting you to experience journeying not as a destination, but as an ongoing state of being.
The weight we carry is part of Oerol Werkplaats. Within the Oerol Werkplaats, both emerging and established artists are given space to develop location-inspired work throughout the year, often in collaboration with partners. During the festival, several of these artists-in-residence explicitly invite you, the audience, to become part of their work in progress.
