Treework is a contemporary opera performed by an ensemble of people and trees. A musical and physical performance created in collaboration with the Østmarka forest in Norway. In this early morning performance, the trees are not scenery, but active performers and creative beings.
Espen Hjort and Mees Borgman — together known as Landmarks — create theatrical works that move beyond the human perspective. Starting from ecological questions, they strive for radical equality with non-humans by inviting them in as co-creators. After Stonework, a duet between stone and human, they now present Treework, in collaboration with trees. What can trees teach us about time, resilience and living with chaos?
Treework premieres at Oerol and will go on to tour internationally. As the work is performed with different trees and forests, it will grow — ring by ring — into an archive of encounters between humans and trees.
