Technology and infrastructure

David Jansen is our head of technology & safety. Below we share some things about technology and safety so that you know what we can do for you from Oerol and what we expect and need from you. If you have any specific questions about this, you can contact David and your production coordinator from the beginning of April.

Power

If your show/project needs power on location, Oerol will take care of this. We work together with Event Engineers for this, who will look at the best option that suits your power needs in consultation with you and us. The costs for the power supply are for your own account.

For Oerol 2025, the starting point is that we will no longer use traditional diesel generators at any location within the Natura 2000 area. This is also not permitted under our permit for the Nature Conservation Act (due to nitrogen emissions). We also try to work with generators as little as possible for locations outside the Natura 2000 area. This means that we will often work with batteries and use fixed voltage where possible.

Based on the information we have received from you and the location where you are, we will make an initial inventory of the required power supply. The production coordinator will also contact you about this in early April. For more information about the possible power supplies and the associated prices, click here .

Light, sound, rigging

Oerol offers the possibility to rent light, sound, rigging and video materials via our house supplier Ampco Flashlight. We have a discount arrangement with Ampco Flashlight, which allows us to offer these materials at an attractive price. If you want to make use of this, we can connect you to Ampco Flashlight to request a quote. You will then receive the basic rental price (excluding transport) from this supplier.

Regarding the transport of these rented materials to the island, there are two options. Of course, you can choose to pick up the rented materials yourself from Ampco Flashlight and transport them to the island. The second option is to have the items transported by us. We then transport all ordered items to the island at once, from where the materials are then distributed across the locations. This delivery usually takes place sometime in the week before the festival. If you choose this last option, it is also possible to use the support and emergency service of Ampco Flashlight on the island. The price list includes the guideline amount for this island service & transport per m3.

Video / projection

If you use video or projection: we work together with BeamSystems, who will gladly think along with you where necessary. BeamSystems offers an interesting Oerol discount on its products and where possible support on the island.

Transmitting Microphones/Headphones

To prevent performances from interfering with each other, it is important that frequencies are adjusted where necessary. If you bring your own equipment, you must report this. Also useful to prevent interference from other users: www.microfoonbanden.nl.

Working on location

Responsible use of technology and prevention of short circuits at open-air locations:

  • Create a tent for the control area: keep the lighting computer, sound mixer and amplifiers dry!
  • Always keep extra tarpaulins and/or large garbage bags on hand.
  • For example, do not place speakers, amplifiers and dimmers directly on the ground (sand, soil, grass), but on a raised surface (such as a pallet).
  • Make sure that the counter plug (cap) is at the top, so that rainwater can never enter the plug.
  • Never seal connectors completely with plastic and tape. The created pocket can still contain moisture, which you do not see at first, but which can condense due to heat.
  • Do not place connectors (such as multis, Schuko plugs, DMX or SpeakON) directly in or on the ground. Better is on a stone with a small canopy.
  • After a rain shower, check all lights and connectors for water before switching on the power (so make sure you are on site well in advance to solve any problems).
  • Is it raining or has it rained? Then always keep all lights on at 10-15% well before the start of the performance, so that splash water can evaporate.
  • Check the location regularly. Are all the safety’s still properly tightened? Are all the connectors still off the ground? Is all the cabling still sufficiently slack (cables not taut)? Are the speakers free of sand and moisture? Are all the lights free of, for example, blown-in dry grass (can cause fire)?
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher within reach at the control room and at other possible locations where technology and/or (open) fire is present.
  • Use filter holders to tint lamps (possibly with aluminum tape for construction lamps, but not with gaffer tape).

99% of safe working is not about regulations, but about logical thinking and careful use of all materials. Do you want advice or a check from Oerol? Please contact head of technology & safety, David Jansen via 0562 448 448.
