How do we experience a landscape when we listen to it rather than look at it? In Luisterend Landschap (Listening Landscape), host Lin An Phoa is joined by artist Karlijn Hamer and Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) to discuss the role of listening, darkness, and attentiveness in our relationship with the natural environment. Set against the backdrop of Terschelling’s unique Dark Sky landscape, they explore how art can help us engage differently with a place, prompting us to pause and reflect on the natural processes that so often go unnoticed.
In Luisterend Landschap, artist Karlijn Hamer and forest ranger Remi Hougee the Dutch Forestry Commission reflect on the significance of darkness as a fundamental part of experiencing nature. Karlijn will share insights into NYX, an audio piece that invites visitors to consciously experience the transition from day to night at dusk, available to listen to throughout Oerol. Through this individual listening experience, which can be undertaken at a location of the participant’s own choosing, audiences are encouraged to open themselves up to the sounds, rhythms, and shifts of the surrounding landscape. Together, they explore how art and conservation can foster a deeper appreciation for silence, darkness, and the fragile qualities of the Wadden region.
