Mayte Veenstra, the face of northern indie act MAYTE, feels most connected to her emotions when singing in Frisian. The stories in her songs revolve around longing, hope, loss and dreams — universal themes she captures through alternative pop infused with electronic elements, raw guitar sounds and heartfelt Frisian lyrics. Together with her five-piece band, she takes you on a journey through an explosive and theatrical live performance.
Together with her band — made up of Sander Koning, Bram Welbedacht, Jochem Knoef and Esker van de Werken — Mayte spent the autumn of 2025 working on her debut release. Following the release of the record Himel Iepen, they performed a sold-out launch show at Neushoorn, after which Mayte embarked on her Tsjerketour, performing alongside guitarist Sander Koning in churches across the Frisian countryside. In 2025, MAYTE won the Kleine Prijs van Friesland, the Frisian song contest LIET, and the Bernlef Prize.
