In this glass installation, the global ocean currents—also known as the MOC (Meridional Overturning Circulation)—are made visible. Ocean currents are a complex, three-dimensional system in constant motion; a single full cycle of this system can take up to a thousand years. This work presents a vision of the future in which the MOC has ground to a halt due to climate change.
The MOC largely determines the Earth’s climate by distributing heat and energy across the globe. The oceans near Antarctica and Greenland serve as the “engine” of this current. Due to melting ice caps and climate change, this engine is losing its power. Scientists predict that by the year 2100, the MOC could weaken by as much as 50%. This would have profound consequences for the global climate, sea-level rise, and marine life. Worldwide, some regions will face increased flooding while others suffer from extreme drought. In the Netherlands, the climate would likely become colder and drier, accompanied by more severe storms. This confronting installation offers a glimpse into the future that awaits us.
Visual arts can be visited daily from Saturday 13 June between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
