Binne wi de leste? Bin wi de lêste? Binne we de leste? On Terschelling, three dialects are still spoken, but the number of speakers is declining rapidly. In ’t Paradiis, a cinematic audio installation, you hear islanders trying to hold on to their language, recover it, or learn it anew. What is lost when words disappear – and what emerges when people try to bring them back to life?
Twenty island children took part in this project. With their self-devised questions, they travelled across the island to interview dialect speakers. The conversations were not only about language, but about what language evokes: memories, pride, shame, family ties and the sense of belonging – or not.
