The Zawose Queens

The Zawose Queens are Pendo and Leah Zawose: the first female lead singers from their renowned musical dynasty to perform the fluid polyrhythms and polyphonic chants of the Gogo people from central Tanzania’s Dodoma region. Inspired by ancestral traditions, nature, and rituals, their music seamlessly blends traditional instruments with subtle electronic elements.

Following the legacy of their father and grandfather, Dr. Hukwe Zawose, Pendo and Leah released their debut album Maisha in 2024. In an exhilarating performance, you will discover a profound connection to nature, ceremony, and ritual through their dance-inspired fusion of the organic, the harmonic, and modern-day electronics. The lyrics, sung in their native Kigogo, speak of a passion for music and the wonders of life. They tell a story of pride in one’s surroundings, in tradition, and in their East African roots.
