WHY AREN’T YOU SAYING ANYTHING? is a dance theatre duet about the words you swallow when you don’t quite know what to say. Where do those words go? What shapes do they take when they are suppressed? Do they become a source of sadness or of energy, of defeat or of defiance?
What happens when you are not heard? Because you don’t speak the right jargon, don’t have the right appearance, or are constantly interrupted? This duet is a response to a society that demands you speak quickly, loudly and convincingly. There seems to be no space for curiosity or doubt. No time to think. The preliminary research for this performance took place in the megacity of Cairo in Egypt. Amid the chaos of political unrest, pollution, overstimulation and inequality, choreographer Ilja Geelen saw how people continue to find ways to truly listen to one another through making art.
