Atelier Lab

The Atelier Lab is for creators who aspire to work on location but are still new to it. The program includes getting acquainted with Oerol, the locations, the field, and each other. Together, they visit rehearsals, performances, and meet with other creators and sources of inspiration. The Atelier Lab offers a mutual introduction, with the exchange of ideas at its core.

During the 2024 festival edition, 15 young theatre makers and 3 creative producers from DEGASTEN, Meervaart Studio, and Bijlmer Parktheater visited Oerol for an all-inclusive study trip. The young participants were introduced to site-specific theatre in a natural environment. They attended performances and Expeditions, and had discussions with the director, production team, head of international collaboration, creative producer of the Werkplaats, and various creators.
Together with the creators, we visited the Over het IJ Festival (which was in the process of being set up). Here too, we curated a programme that provided a representative overview of the festival.
The creators were thoroughly introduced to the island of Terschelling and the Oerol Festival. We provided a cross-section of the festival by showcasing performances at a wide variety of locations, as well as Expeditions, the festival hub with music, storytelling, street theatre, the talk show, and a dance performance. We observed both works in progress and rehearsals, as well as completed performances, and where possible, personally met with the creators and theatre companies.

During the Land Art Weekend, we toured through Flevoland to visit various works, allowing the creators to experience permanent visual art in public spaces.

We kicked off the Atelier Lab at the NDSM Werf. This day was entirely focused on getting to know each other as well as the site itself. Simone Hogendijk provided us with more information about the Over het IJ Festival, and artists duo Bart Stuart and Klaar van der Lippe gave us a tour of the site, sharing their perspectives on the changes that have occurred there over the past years.
