De Eenzame Stad

In July 2022, Johannes Lievens spent a week wandering around the beautiful Parc Montsouris in the south of Paris. He engaged in conversations with people about loneliness and invited them to join him around a fire at the end of the week. De Eenzame stad (the lonely city) is a monologue about loneliness and being alone, based on seven encounters in the park.

Lievens’ performance explores how being alone can suddenly turn into loneliness, and how one can learn to be alone again after experiencing loneliness. He wrote his monologue during a writing residency at deBuren in July 2022 in Paris. De Eenzame stad premiered on August 1, 2023, during the Zomer van Antwerpen.

Lievens writes meticulously, with incisive observations and the recognizable melancholy of a twenty-something who has just entered ‘adult life’ and sees many certainties being overturned. – Charlotte De Somviele, De Standaard
