During World War II, Suriname was a major source of bauxite extraction by the Americans, a well-documented fact. But was that all that was noteworthy at the time? It’s often said that there was no war in the former colony, but what exactly was happening there? Emma decided to investigate.
Emma Lesuis inherited a treasure trove of archival material from Suriname: film footage shot in the 1940s and early 1950s. While watching these images, she wondered what was happening in Suriname during World War II. She visited places where thrilling stories came to life and spoke with people who still had memories of those – for many – good old days. The result is a cinematic and musical theatre performance featuring nostalgic images from the past.
