Anders ik wel

Anders ik wel is an intimate and confronting performance about the trajectory of shame, being excluded, and the ways in which we keep ourselves afloat. In short: Geoffrey van der Ven shares as if the Friday afternoon drinks have gone on far too long. He blends stories, personal anecdotes, and mythology into a performance full of recognition, connection, and discomfort.

In this theatrical quest, Geoffrey discusses how shame develops and lingers. He attempts to find answers in Greek myths that turn out to be incorrect and refuses to settle for the consolation of the ugly duckling (“What if you just remain an ugly duckling?”). Instead, he digs into his own ‘residual shame’ and the question of how to deal with it. The performance is characterised by Geoffrey’s personal, sharp delivery – a mix of storytelling, self-deprecation, and awkward recognition that will make you laugh, frown, and secretly nod along.

Geoffrey speaks with emphasis and maintains piercing eye contact as he moves gracefully from one side of the café to the other. Patrons hang on Van der Ven’s every word, partly because he makes himself so vulnerable—without a microphone and with that strange, long fable. No disguises here. — Shira Keller, NRC
