Bambie showcases the absurd complexity of contemporary nature management in a witty, visual, and physical outdoor performance. Come and watch as well-meaning cultivators try to “re-educate” nature, stumble over confusing laws and regulations, wrestle with plants that refuse to be pruned, and do battle with a brazen invasive species that is outsmarting everyone.
This absurdist outdoor performance by Mime Theatre Group Bambie takes place on a vacant plot of land. Two figures with agricultural ambitions embark on a collaboration between man and nature. With a little care, the miracle of natural growth and blossom unfolds. However, through witty and poetic scenes, Bambie portrays how this idyllic partnership has devolved into a struggle. Where humans pursue total dominance for their own self-interest, nature withers away. Yet, if the greenery is left to its own devices, uninvited guests arrive to devour or overgrow the lot. In our tiny country, every attempt to grant nature more freedom inevitably clashes with conflicting interests.
