Titus ‘Muis’ Muizelaar (theatre maker, 75) and Y.M.P. (spoken word artist, 36) search for the meaning of life with the help of 50 Cent, Samuel Beckett, musicians, a DJ, and a theatre crew. That meaning is -spoiler alert- never found, but there is comfort in the voice of the other and the knowledge that you are not alone, at least for as long as the story lasts.
As a storytelling duo, Muizelaar and Y.M.P take to the stage with the lyrics of 50 Cent (Get Rich or Die Tryin’), the texts of Samuel Beckett (Krapp’s Last Tape), and their own life stories. In their narratives—soaked in a persistent battle against the odds—the daily struggle of the Black man is juxtaposed with the existential loneliness of the white man in the late twentieth-century West. An ode to a turbulent friendship that ultimately transcends all conventions regarding colour, heritage, political preference, and upbringing. A performance for all ages, brimming with repertoire and experiment, activism and l’art pour l’art.
