The Fryske Oersonate is a free Frisian translation of the Dadaist sound poem Ursonate by Kurt Schwitters. In this performance, the boundaries of the Frisian language are explored through sound and rhythm. Like the Ursonate, the Fryske Oersonate is based on the classical sonata form of four movements. Erik de Boer looks at society with an alienating sense of humour, in which past and present strikingly resemble one another. For many, the Frisian language may sound unfamiliar, yet it shares similarities with the sound structure of the Ursonate. With a visual collage of footage from the Frisian Image and Audio Archive, the performance becomes a playful, musical ode to language, art and history. Also well worth experiencing for non-Frisian speakers!
