Once you’ve heard Guy Corneille sing, you won’t easily forget it. How often does someone soar from Leonard Cohen-like depths to Jeff Buckley-esque heartcries? Regular Oerol-goers might know him as the singer-guitarist-dancer from De Dansers. This year, you’ll also see him with his own indie rock band at Oerol.
Guy moves you with his deep, soulful voice and poetic songs. In recent editions of Oerol, he appeared in the dance concerts of De Dansers (including Hush, Hold Your Horses, and Shake Shake Shake) and in the poetry concert Ik Zeg Kraai. Under his own name, he plays -or rather rags- with his three-piece band, with shredding guitars and relentless drums. They sometimes sound like The Libertines and Two Gallants, but if you listen closely, you’ll hear some really angry love songs. Perfect for an afternoon of nihilistic romance and (slightly off-key) singing along.
