Nia and her mother Tess are competing in The Battle of the Band. Not a music competition, but a “best friends” quiz. In the game, mother and daughter face off to prove just how strong their bond is. But what happens when the world keeps making them feel that—because of their different ages and different skin tones—they don’t actually look like they belong together?

The story is inspired by the personal life of director Judith Faas, who created the Oerol hit STRAF in 2022. Faas is a white mother with a daughter of color. While they are very much alike, their different skin tones mean that, to the outside world, they are also not. And they are confronted with this reality often. Can you feel the same when you look different or are different? And what does this mean for the bond between parent and child? The conversations Faas and her daughter had on this subject form the foundation of this musical performance about motherhood, identity, and growing up in a culturally diverse society. Featuring Eva Zwart and Kimberly Thompson, among others. Following the theatre tour and the play-script book, ZOEK DE VERSCHILLEN now comes to Oerol as a musical performance for adults and children (12+).
