UPDATE: Red Line action on Terschelling during Oerol
On Sunday, June 15, thousands of people around the world will form a red line as a call to governments to stop human rights violations in Gaza. On Terschelling, we are also providing space for this initiative, at the request of visitors, artists, and islanders. In consultation with the municipality, we are supporting the organization of a red line on the island.
Location: beach of West aan Zee, next to the Strandtheater Time: 13:00
Why do we think it’s important to show solidarity and form a red line? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:
“Human rights are the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace. Human rights are a responsibility for everyone: governments, individuals, and social institutions. Since 1948, all countries have been obligated under international law to help prevent or stop an alleged genocide.” That includes the Netherlands.
The red line is a call to our government to stop the violence and genocide, and to provide humanitarian aid. We fully support this.
Is Oerol becoming political now? Aren’t we a cultural festival? In a time of increasing polarization, wars across nearly all continents, and a climate crisis, Oerol gives space to creators to engage with urgent societal issues and offer new perspectives. We see this reflected in our programming again this year. We provide room for encounters between different generations, backgrounds, and viewpoints—and we have always highlighted social themes.
Everyone is free to shape their own Oerol experience. And that also applies to the red line. Want to participate—or not? Either way, it’s all okay. That’s Oerol too!
