No trains around Leeuwarden from 17 June to 9 July

Arriva and NS published a press release on Friday, 7 June 2024. We are sharing this information as it may affect your return journey after Oerol.

From Monday 17 June to Tuesday 9 July 2024, ProRail and contractor Strukton Rail will be working on improving the railway in and around Leeuwarden. Due to these works, there will be no trains running between Leeuwarden and Harlingen Haven, Leeuwarden and Stavoren, and Leeuwarden and Akkrum. Between Leeuwarden and Hurdegaryp, no trains will run from 17 to 20 June 2024 and on 9 July. Arriva and NS will provide buses instead.

Passengers who wish to use the replacement bus service must have a valid travel document, such as an OV-chipkaart or bank card. You can check in at the departure station and check out at the arrival station. Passengers should expect longer travel times of 15 to 60 minutes. Existing connections cannot be guaranteed.

Stops for Arriva and NS express and local buses

As with the regular timetable, express and/or local buses will run from early morning until late at night along the railway stations on the routes where no trains are running. The buses will stop at various stops at and near the train stations. The bus stops at all train stations except IJlst. Between IJlst and Sneek, taxis will run. The taxi connects to the bus to and from Stavoren and the bus towards Leeuwarden.

Limited capacity for bicycles

There is limited capacity available for passengers who want to take their bicycles. Arriva and NS have arranged special buses with trailers for bicycles that connect to the departure times of the ferry. The same rules apply as for taking bicycles on the train. At Leeuwarden, Akkrum, and Harlingen Haven stations, passengers who want to take their bicycles will be assisted by Arriva and NS staff. Both carriers ask passengers to be aware of possible waiting times. There is no space for large luggage, such as handcarts. Tents and backpacks can be taken on the bus. More information about transporting bicycles and luggage and the timetable for this towards Harlingen Haven can be found at arriva.nl/stationleeuwarden.

Travel information

More information about the timetable, bus stops, and taking bicycles can be found at www.arriva.nl/werkaanhetspoor and www.ns.nl/werkaanhetspoor. From 10 days before the travel date, up-to-date travel advice can be found in the travel planners.

Bus accessibility

The buses do not have the same accessibility for wheelchairs or mobility scooters as the train. Arriva and NS therefore offer a taxi service for passengers with disabilities.
